Drone Damage Documentation in Picayune After Hurricane Isaias

For homeowners, contractors, and adjusters with property in Picayune, Poplarville, and unincorporated Pearl River County. Once local officials say it is safe, lossmap can fly a record of the roof, every side, and trees and debris where they landed, before tarps go on and cleanup starts. Every job is reviewed and quoted, and that review confirms whether and when a flight can happen. Nothing is charged when you order.

Storm facts, as of October 9, 2026, 4:55 PM CDT

  • The National Hurricane Center's 4 PM CDT advisory on October 9 placed Isaias about 90 miles south of Pensacola with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, moving north at 17 mph, and forecast landfall on the western Florida Panhandle coast that evening, then a track across Alabama into the Tennessee Valley. National Hurricane Center, Public Advisory 13.
  • That advisory carried a hurricane warning from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay and Gulf county line in Florida, and tropical storm warnings to the west into Louisiana and to the east to the Aucilla River. National Hurricane Center, Public Advisory 13.
  • The same 4 PM CDT advisory said tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles from the center, forecast rainfall of 2 to 5 inches across much of the remainder of the Southeast beyond southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, and southwest Georgia, and said flash, urban, and river flooding was possible across the region. National Hurricane Center, Public Advisory 13.
  • For storm information specific to an area, including possible inland watches and warnings, the advisory pointed to the local National Weather Service forecast office. National Hurricane Center, Public Advisory 13.

If Isaias reaches Picayune

Picayune is inland, and the advisory lines above are what the National Hurricane Center said for the storm as a whole; its wind, rain, and tornado lines do not name inland Mississippi. If wind brings a tree or limbs down on a roof, lifts shingles, or lets rain in anywhere in Picayune, Poplarville, and unincorporated Pearl River County, the record that helps most is the one made before the tree is cut off the roof and the tarp goes on. A drone flight records the roof from overhead without anyone climbing it, and it records where trees and limbs came to rest before they are hauled to the curb.

Safety first

Do not go back, fly a drone, or climb a roof in Picayune until local officials say it is safe. Stay off the roof: a drone flight is how the roof gets documented without anyone on it. Do what keeps people safe and prevents more damage, even if that means the tarp goes on before anyone flies.

Airspace around Picayune

The FAA decides who may fly where. Here is what FAA airspace data and orders show in and around Pearl River County, checked October 9, 2026:

  • Picayune, Poplarville, Carriere, and the rest of Pearl River County (an area where FAA data show no controlled airspace near the ground, no restricted area from the surface, and no national security drone restriction in the county). The Class E airspace around Picayune Municipal, Poplarville-Pearl River County, and the hospital heliport in Picayune starts 700 feet or more above the ground, and FAA data show no facility map grid in the county. The pilot keeps clear of airport and helicopter traffic and checks the exact address, and after the storm the FAA may put a temporary flight restriction over the area. FAA data
  • Restricted areas R-4403A through R-4403F, Stennis Space Center (restricted airspace from the ground up just south of the county line in Hancock County; only R-4403F, which starts at 4,000 feet MSL, reaches the southern edge of Pearl River County). FAA data show no restricted airspace near the ground in Pearl River County, but the Stennis areas begin just across the county line, so the pilot checks the FAA map for any address near the Hancock County line. faa.gov

For every address in Picayune, the pilot checks the airspace and gets FAA authorization where it is required. The job review confirms whether and when a flight can happen. See the FAA rules for drone roof inspections.

FAA flight restrictions after the storm

The FAA issues temporary flight restrictions for natural disasters such as hurricanes. They are published as NOTAMs and keep aircraft, including drones, from flying in an area without permission for a limited time. Active restrictions over Mississippi are on the FAA’s TFR list. To fly in one, a pilot coordinates with the controlling agency named in it, and approval is the FAA’s decision. A restricted area can add time to a shoot, and some flights wait until a restriction lifts.

Local drone rules

  • NASA Stennis Space Center buffer zone. NASA's Stennis range office requires a range request application for all aircraft operations inside the Stennis buffer zone or on federal property, with a separate questionnaire for small drones, and parts of the buffer zone reach into southern Pearl River County. An address near the Hancock County line is checked against the buffer zone before a job is quoted. In its words: “The NASA Stennis Range Office requires a Range Request Application for all aircraft and marine operations within the Stennis Space Center’s buffer zone or federal property.” nasa.gov
  • State wildlife management areas. Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks rules say drones may not be launched from or landed on wildlife management areas the department owns, such as Old River WMA in the county. In its words: “Unmanned Aerial Vehicles may not be launched from or landed on MDWFP-Owned Wildlife Management Areas.” mdwfp.com

We did not find a local drone takeoff or landing rule on the official pages of the City of Picayune, the City of Poplarville, and unincorporated Pearl River County. Check with the city or county before launching from a park or beach. Pilots check local rules for takeoff and landing sites as well as FAA rules.

Roof permits and tarping

If it is safe, document the roof before the tarp goes on, then document the tarp once it is on. Before repairs, check what the building department requires.

  • City of Picayune. Picayune says a building permit is needed for all renovations, with the fee based on the estimated project cost, so bring the estimate. The page does not name roofing or storm repairs. picayune.ms.us
  • City of Poplarville. Poplarville's building permit application lists roof and repair work and warns of a penalty for starting before the permit is approved. City code also says that after a declared local disaster, roofing, debris removal, and repair contractors need a temporary city work permit before working in the city. library.municode.com
  • Unincorporated Pearl River County. Outside city limits, the county Building Division issues building permits, and county ordinance requires roofing contractors to pass an exam before working in the county. pearlrivercounty.net

Storm debris pickup

Once debris goes to the curb or is hauled off, the record of where it landed is gone. If it is safe to leave it, fly first, then move it.

  • City of Picayune. Standing service, not storm guidance: the city collects yard debris and rubbish at the curb, with yard trimmings, leaves, and clippings bagged and pine straw loose. The city's October 8 Isaias alert covered sandbags only. picayune.ms.us
  • City of Poplarville. Standing rule only, not storm guidance: yard debris left on the city right-of-way gets a notice to remove, and if it stays, the city removes it and bills the owner. We did not find a storm debris page. library.municode.com
  • Unincorporated Pearl River County. Standing rule only: the county does not run household pickup, so each owner arranges private pickup or hauling. Trees, limbs, and stumps may go by the street only 24 hours before a contracted pickup, and repair debris is removed right away by the contractor or owner. pearlrivercounty.net

What gets documented

  • The roof. Missing and creased shingles and lifted membrane, from straight overhead.
  • The exterior and site. Every side of the structure, plus fences, outbuildings, and detached structures.
  • Wind versus water. Water lines, high-water marks, flood extent, and where debris came to rest.
  • Trees and impact. A tree on a structure before removal, and downed trees across the yard, fences, and vehicles.
  • Emergency work. Tarps and board-up, documented once they are on.

How ordering works

  1. Tell us what happened, the address, and a preferred date, online or at (214) 493-1515.
  2. We review the job and send a quote. That review confirms whether and when a pilot can fly the property. Nothing is charged when you order.
  3. An FAA Part 107 pilot flies the shot list when it is safe and allowed. Flights need safe weather, generally winds under 20 mph and no precipitation.
  4. You get the gallery by link. The delivery timeline comes with the quote.
